About wind farms.
They don’t close down nuclear power stations.
Because wind power isn’t predictable it can’t replace nuclear power, which currently is, and will continue to be, required to provide continuous base-load supply.
The National Grid will need more nuclear or fossil fuel power stations in future as more wind power stations are built. The Government admits this! Wind power is never instead of. It’s always as well as. Witness recently heralded plans by the UK Government to develop another 10 nuclear power stations.
They don’t provide free electricity.
Due to the rigged electricity market created by, and legislated within, the UK Government (effective subsidies received by the operators via the Renewables Obligation Certificates system), wind energy is costing 3 times the price of conventional power (including decommissioning costs). The cost of electricity is set to rise by as much as 65% - the Government recognises this. The Government doesn’t pay for the huge profits the wind farm owners reap - we do… through what amounts to a stealth tax collected via our ever-increasing electricity bills. The Government and the developers keep pretty quiet about this of course.
There is no evidence that they reduce greenhouse gases.
Denmark has the highest concentration of wind farms in Europe, and also the worst energy carbon footprint in Europe. Claims by the operators for reductions are based on the equivalent capacity coal-fired power station being closed down. This does not happen. The amount of power from a wind farm varies from minute to minute as the wind strength varies. This isn't suitable for the National Grid system, which keeps the boilers of its coal-fired stations running at the normal rate. There is no reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The Scottish Executive has admitted this.
But they do…
Deter tourists.
An official VisitScotland survey has confirmed that most tourists would not choose to stay in an area with wind power stations.
Devalue property.
Depending on how close the property is, values can fall by 20% or more.
Give rise to health worries.
Some British GPs report that wind power stations have adversely affected their patients’ health. It is becoming more and more accepted within the medical community that living too close to wind turbines can cause heart disease, tinnitus, vertigo, stress, panic attacks, migraines and sleep deprivation.
Degrade landscape value.
Future applications for development in the formerly wild area can use the argument that the land is already degraded by turbines. Which of course it is.
Interfere with TV reception.
Picture and sound can both be affected.
Harm wildlife.
The RSPB and SNH have both confirmed that wind turbines kill birds and disturb nesting sites. The Lammermuir Plateau represents prime nesting territory for many species, including protected birds such as the Short Eared Owl and raptors of all kinds, especially large numbers of Buzzards.
Don’t you think all this is an incredibly high price to pay for wind factories that won't close a single nuclear power station?
